Introduction
Autism: Some Assembly Required
We’re very interested in helping people talk about uncomfortable topics, like autism, and are looking for people who would like to help. As President/CEO of WeWrite, LLC, a company which publishes group-authored books by children, we invite you to join our newest effort—autism awareness and advocacy.
We’re creating a powerful team to bring this to life. The not-so-fanciful illustrated story, inspired by children with autism and their families, will come together with the help of an illustrator.
Autism: Some Assembly Required offers a fun new way to talk and share. Once people talk about autism, they get others to talk. And that’s the point. When people talk, there is awareness. With awareness, people become engaged.
This full-color story, told through a Choose-a-Path format, spotlights four distinctive characters, each with their own cartoon style and perspective.
- Pyper, a teen pipe-person with autism, is love-able, build-able, and a hero. He helps others understand autism, in spite of his challenges.
- DadMom is a big, burly advocate with tough skin, like metal. DadMom works tirelessly to advance the cause, which is always changing.
- Other is like a glob. It is anywhere. Everywhere. Sometimes critical, sometimes predictable, Other is mostly well-meaning. As Other moves, it touches and interacts, incorporating and changing shape as it glides. Other’s colorful spectrum also flows within, constantly creating new beauty.
- ProPerson wears many hats. She is part of a team. This could include the doctor, an attorney advocate, and the school psychologist. ProPerson is called in during interventions.
